Costume Conundrum

Hello MAPA Family!

Maui Academy of Performing Arts appreciates and applauds your dedication to your child’s artistic development in this difficult economic time. We want to do anything and everything we can to respond our community’s needs. We would like to give you an opportunity to make your opinion heard on the matter of the Spring Extravaganza costume policy. Are you in favor of the $55/class costume fee for the Spring Extravaganza or would you prefer to explore other alternatives? Will having to pay a costume fee have an impact on which classes you choose for your child? Please let us know what you think. Your comments and suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

Aloha and Happy Holidays!

The payment of $55.00 added on to each class for a costume that is worn once and usually donated back to MAPA is quite costly. For those of us that are signing up for 5 or more classes, this added cost for costumes is more than the cost of an entire class for the semester. It would be nice to have a cost percentage break on the costumes (the entire cost of what is paid to MAPA) if signing up for 2 or more, or 5 or more classes rather just a percentage off for the classes themselves. Thanks for your consideration with this matter.

I would also like to express my appreciation for the lowered class cost for the Keiki Performance Group class, charging only $50.00 - I wonder why this is not the rate for all of the performance groups as in fairness it should be.

One matter to possibly look into also is to be using the dance scholarships ONLY for those students that are truly in need. I continue to observe those receiving scholarships taking classes at other dance studios and being able to pay for those classes yet are on scholarship with MAPA. It would be nice if the scholarships were able to reach those individuals that truly cannot afford to take any classes.

Thanks again!

yes, $55 is costly and I wish we wouldn't have to pay it - but honestly, I also enjoy seeing these kids perform in those nice costumes - sooo... as much as it is costly, I think I wouldn't mind paying it. I will be enrolling 2 kids so that will be $110 additional for us. Maybe we will stop eating at MacDonald's for a year ;)

You are all doing a wonderful job. Thanks for asking our input.

I think that the costume fee mainly hurts the ballet students because the ballet costumes usually cost more than the jazz and hip hop students. At least the jazz and hip hop students can sometimes reuse their costume in their own wardrobe.

I just enrolled my 2 kids. One for ballet (will pay for costume) and 1 for hip hop (won't pay for costume - they'll just talk about what to wear)

Paying for just one costume instead of 2 helped :)
